Why does my horse need a dentist?

RocketTheme

Don’t always assume that bad behaviour is to ensure you have a bad ride; it could be a sign of something happening in the mouth. Dental treatment is a necessity for good health, safe horse riding and getting 100% performance out of your horse every time. As your horse communicates with you through behaviour, it is your responsibility to read these behaviours and act accordingly.

Up A Level With A PED Bit

Up A Level With A PED Bit

I own a 14 year old TB gelding who has always been hard in the mouth, hard to control and got to the point where he was rearing every time I applied pressure on the bit.

I had Nicole out to do his teeth and the difference is amazing. She did a wonderful job and even let me look inside his mouth and have a feel so that I knew what was going on.

He is now riden in a PED Bit and he has never worked better. He is 100% soft in the mouth and we are even doing XC in it with plenty of control. We have now moved up a level simply because my horse is now happy and comfortable to be riden. Thanks Nic for doing such a great job!!!!

PED Bit wins Australian Interschool Dressage Primary Preliminary Championship

PED Bit wins Australian Interschool Dressage Primary Preliminary Championship

Nikki asked me try a Performance Equine Dentistry (PED) bit just before the 2011 Interschool Nationals and I couldn’t believe how much softer in the mouth my pony was, he was no longer heavy on my hands. I believe the PED bit has made a big difference to my pony, he is now an absolute pleasure to ride. We won the 2011 Australian Interschool Dressage Primary Preliminary Championship in the PED bit.

Nikki is lovely to deal with and so professional and has amazing knowledgeable about horse’s teeth and mouth. and gentle with the horses and I thank her for suggesting the bit and for doing my pony’s teeth.

I would like to thanks Nicole for her ongoing expertise and support over the past few years with my horse "Salisbury My Guy". Nicole has been looking after his teeth for sometime now and he also wears her bits on all of his bridles.

Nicole is always more then happy to take the time to explain the procedure being carried out and is very thorough. She is very prompt and relaible.
I have been known to call by to pickup new bits or grab more bits to try on horses.

Sport Horse Gelding Now Listens

Sport Horse Gelding Now Listens

Nic Graham from Performance Equine Dentistry recently came out and did my horses teeth. He is a 5 1/2 year old Irish Sport Horse gelding who has just had his first Pre-Novice eventing start. He is bold and honest jumping but I have huge challenges getting him soft on the flat, he is quite big and long in the back so has trouble working through properly from behind.

He had been getting gradually worse in the mouth and it had gotten to the stage where I couldn't event bend him left and right. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong because this was not in his personality. Nic was recommended to my by a good friend and since she did Archie's teeth he has been a different horse.

Although I feel he will always struggle with some aspects of the dressage phase due to his natural build, he is now much more ride-able and listening to me. Not only did Nic help me out fixing Archie's mouth, I also learned a lot about Equine Dentistry that I had not been taught in the past many years of working with performance horses.

I would highly recommend Nic and Performance Equine Dentistry to anyone with a horse wanting to do the right thing by them and give them the best life possible.

Thanks Nic!

Utimate Performance, Ultimate Balance. A Happy 18 YO Gelding.

Utimate Performance, Ultimate Balance. A Happy 18 YO Gelding

From the first step my horse took with me on his back I knew he was a different horse. There are no words to describe how amazing the transformation was and how easily it had happened after searching for so many solutions. The answer to my problem... Performance Equine Dentist, Nicole Graham with the combination of the Performance Equine Dentistry Bit.

My main competition horse, an 18 year old TB Gelding has become one of the nicest horses I have ridden since having his teeth done and bit fitted by Nicole. He is soft, smooth, calm, consistent and even his movement has improved 100% through his back and legs. He is now gaining muscle at a faster rate, maintaining a consistant weight as he is able and willing to eat his food. Not to mention his behaviour in general, I have never seen my horse be happier within himself.

To be 100% honest, Performance Equine Dentisty has been a god send for myself and my horses. No other denist will be touching my horses mouths. I am absolutely wrapped and astonished at the improvement of my horses. I recommend Performance Equine Dentistry to everyone and anyone. It is the answer I have been searching for, for years and I believe everyone should give it a shot, you will be suprised as the fantastic results!

Thank you for all your help in making my horses their happy selves !

A Completely Different Horse

A Completely Different Horse

I have a ASH who has a very nice nature although quite different when I would go for a ride. I new she was getting older in age and thought I would get her teeth checked because she was a slow eater and dropped alot of her food. Nicole came out and educated me alot about teeth and horse behavior and she did some outstanding work on my horses teeth. I was really blown away.

I purchased a small loose ring comfort snaffle bit from Nicole also which is what she recommended for my horse and now she is eating with no problems, unbeliveable to ride and very responsive and she is now a completely different horse with the most sweetest personality.

I had a nasty accident on a horse about 9 months ago and has taken alot to build up my confidence again although since Nicole has done the work on my horse, it has changed her behavior and boosted my confidence greatly. Thanks heaps Nicole.

30 Years Searching For A True Professional

30 Years Searching For A True Professional

I have worked with horses for over 30 years and experienced various equine dentistry techniques used with little changes to troublesome horses, be it movement issues, behaviour or general condition.

Nic has come to the rescue, the needs and care of the horses is first and formost seen to and with great improvement in all the horses, what ever the issues were. Nic is the only one who has ever looked at our horses as whole beings, and the results are proof of what can be achieved. Nic is a true professional in every sense of the word and is only too happy to ensure the horse she is treating gets its individual requirements/needs seen to.
Thank you Nic.

Stiff and cold backed thoroughbred.

Stiff and cold backed thoroughbred

I was given a six year old thoroughbred who was off the track and proceeded to go through the education process when the horse became really stiff and cold backed. He didnt want to bend at all and he didn't seem to step through from behind. Eventually he started bucking and threw me off.

It seemed remarkable that a really quiet horse who was only remotely affected from racing could get worse with work rather than better. Eventually he was turned out for a year and then we had to decide his fate. We would give him one more chance by getting his teeth done with Olivia from Performance Equine Dentistry and then if adjustments were needed and sucessful we would see a manipulative therapist to put things back where they belong.

Once the horse was sedated the girls from Performance Equine Dentistry started to find all sorts of scarry problems that they explained to me on a horse head skeleton. Everything was out of alignment and was affecting everything from his pole to his tail. I noticed a difference a couple of days later after he had seen the physio and I was lunging him. He was bending and rounding his back with his hocks moving under him.

Since then he has started going to training days to learn to be an eventer. For a horse who may have been "dogged" I am so glad I persevered with him and had his problems detected. He is now a lovely horse who did deserve every chance to show his potential. Forever grateful thanks Olivia from Performance Equine Dentistry.

Weight Problems . . .Veterinary Hospital Doing Tests.

Weight Problems . . .Veterinary Hospital Doing Tests.

I have a 10yo TB mare. I have had endless trouble keeping weight on her, especially through the winter months, last winter I even had her at the vet hospital, running all sorts of tests to find out why she was constantly losing so much weight.

I have taken her to get her teeth done many times before through other dentists. Finally I had Nic Graham of Performance Equine Dentistry, out to try to fix Ivy's teeth, and this winter has been the only winter she has not only kept the weight on, but also gained weight. I have be able to cut down her feeding, (which was 3-4 times a day last winter) to twice a day, and only minimal hay (which she leaves quite often now). I am EXTREMELY happy with the outcome since Nic Graham has looked at Ivy's teeth, and look forward to the next check-up to see how much more she is improving.

Finally Found The Right Equine Dentist.

Finally found the right Equine Dentist

I have 2 horses, who have had a couple of different "Dentists" out to them over the past couple of years. As they were both due again I decided to give Olivia Zulian {Performance Equine Dentistry - South Australia} a try. Being a Dental Nurse myself I am more than well aware of how bad dental health can affect every aspect of life. Im so impressed with the job that Olivia did on my mare. She explained and pointed out things that I wasnt aware of and now with my Human training see how similar horse dentition and function is to ours. Never again will I use another dentist on my horses. My Standardbred gelding who I show and do Dressage with is being performance done in December. I cant wait to see the difference in him... I cant say enough how impressed I am...Thank you.

Jaw lateral movement was improved from 50% to 95%.

Teeth and jaw relationship to the rest of the body . . . Jaw lateral movement was improved from 50% to 95%.

In June I decided that I wanted to return to riding and began to play around with my retired mare Sooty to see how she would handle things... only to find that she stepped short in the hind and crossed a front leg over. I was ready to accept that at the age of almost 29 she would be better off to stay retired, until I had an encounter of fate (as I like to think of it) with Nic Graham of Performance Equine Dentistry. I had Nic attend to the teeth of my mare in August and immediately afterwards the short stepping and crossing over stopped. I was amazed to learn of and see first hand the relationship between the teeth and jaw and the rest of the horse's body. Being 29 Sooty has a few other physical barriers (which Nic has also helped with), but having her mouth aligned correctly has helped immensely with her way of going.

Recently I purchased a second (younger) horse and have also had Nic attend to his teeth. Jaw lateral movement was improved from 50% to 95%, assisting with weight gain and sorting out some back problems. Nic has also provided advice on feeding and some exercises under saddle to use, as well as a bit fitting and trial of a PZ bit which has been great.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Nic to anyone - she has been a light at the end of the tunnel for myself and my horses! I look forward to continuing the relationship built with both of my horses.

Bad teeth with severve headache and was grumpy.

Bad teeth with servere headache and was grumpy.

Nicole saw us in the horse wash at Melbourne Summer Royal 2010 and asked if she could look at our Connemarra's mouth and head, we said yes, she pushed and prodded and said that the pony had bad teeth and a severve headache and was grumpy with life (we agreed), she said that she could fix this with a full mouth dental service, we talked to the owner of the pony and were given the okay to get the pony's teeth done.

Before we agreed to get Nicky to do the teeth we went and listened to her talk to interested on lookers at her trade stand (a man there was giving her the third degree and she answered his questions well - she was not just talking the talk). So we got the Connies teeth done the next day and have not looked back, the mare is so much happier in bridling and riding and is not grumpy any more. We have put her in a pelham bit for showing and this bit she is happy in and flexes properly. Before if you used draw reins or chambron the mare would get very upset after a couple of minutes, there is now just one happy pony. I am very impressed with what Nicky has done for this pony and will have another checkup already booked for next year.

Thanks Nicky. - Teresa Matthews 2010
