Koyuna Stud is famous as the home of Souvenir, and his son, Supreme, and then his son Koyuna Majestic Supreme, but the Clarks were also responsible for the performance horse career of another super sire of jumpers and Eventers, Brilliant Invader. Howard had heard of Brilliant Invader’s famous son, the Olympic gold medallist, Ready Teddy, and was excited when he found the stallion standing in relative obscurity near Melbourne.
Howard and Darren restarted their breeding program with 12 mares, all either daughters or granddaughters of Souvenir, and kept the two colts: Koyuna Quarterback who is by Majestic Supreme out of a Kumali mare (the exact same breeding of Koyuna Sun Set on sire and dam sides) and Brilliant Invader line with Koyuna Genesis out of a Copperglow (by Souvenir) mare, Lady Dorothy who is the dam of two, 4 star eventers by Majestic Supreme.
Koyuna has been breeding their next generation of brood mares from these two stallions. “The product of that program is just about to hit the scene. Stuart Tinney’s two are the first ones on the eventing scene, Anthony Thomas will be bringing out the first of the showjumpers, but after that they’ll be coming out regularly. I have no doubt that when the next wave starts, they will be the best horses that Koyuna have ever bred. Well, if it’s not I shouldn’t be doing my job, and I’ve put a lot of thought into it. A lot of it was bred into me by my father who was a fantastic judge and has a great instinct for horses, and fortunately I inherited that and my son, Darren inherited that too. And that’s about where we’re up to now, I think the competition horses we are breeding now surpass anything we have produced in the past.”
